Paper picked up in New Scientist
Dr. Masayuki Nishi, a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow working at the GRC, and his colleagues published their research in a recent issue of Geophysical Research Letters (GRL) (link to the paper). They determined the ascending speed of diamonds from the mantle transition zone to the Earth's surface based on experimentally observed transformation kinetics of majoritic garnet found as inclusions in some natural diamonds. The speed was concluded to be unexpectedly fast compared with that of typical mantle convection. This paper has been introduced in New Scientist (link to the article), a famous popular science magazine published in the UK (http://www.newscientist.com) and is distributed world-widely, immediately after it was published in GRL. The article in this magazine is entitled as "Diamonds travel at freeway speeds inside Earth".
