Mantle Plumes: what can they tell us about material properties in the mantle

　Numerical modelling can help us understand the nature of fluid medium in the mantle, because the development of instabilities depend critically on the local properties. The population of deep mantle plumes can reveal to us the characteristics of mantle properties, such as viscosity and thermal expansivity. With the recent post-perovskite phase transition, we can learn more about the properties of the lower mantle.
